Florida's 23rd congressional district
Florida's 23rd congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Florida. Based in South Florida, the district is highly racially gerrymandered and consists of the heavily African American parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties. The district includes Pompano Beach, Boynton Beach and Belle Glade.
The district is currently represented by Democrat Alcee Hastings.
History
Florida's 23rd Congressional District was created after the 1990 U.S. Census. Democrat Alcee Hastings was elected in the first election for the district in 1992 and has subsequently been reelected with token opposition.
Hastings, a former federal judge, sat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida but was impeached and removed from office by Congress in 1989 on charges of bribery, although he was later acquitted of the criminal charges that resulted from the congressional probe. The U.S. Senate did not bar him from holding future federal public office at the time of his conviction (although they had the option to do so), and he was elected to the U.S. House in 1992.
